Hair Extension Training FAQ
Thinking about training with me?
Start here.
These are the questions I hear most from stylists considering Luna Method education. If yours isn't answered here, send me a message and I'll get back to you personally.
The Luna Method
What is the Luna Method?
The Luna Method is a hand-tied weft extension method built around understanding the why behind every decision you make. Instead of memorizing a step-by-step formula, you learn how to evaluate each client's head, hair, and lifestyle, then build an install around what you find.
How is it different from other extension methods I've learned?
Most methods hand you a system and expect every head to fit it. The Luna Method teaches you to think. You'll understand placement, tension, sectioning, and grow-out at a level where you can troubleshoot anything that walks into your chair, not just repeat what you were shown on a mannequin.
I took a cheap all-in-one course and still feel lost. Is this different?
That's exactly who this training is for. I started the same way: a minimal course, more questions than answers, and months of searching online before I found the Luna Method. It didn't hand me answers. It taught me how to find them. That's what I'll teach you.
Will the method damage my client's hair?
No. The Luna Method doesn't stitch to the hair. Bead placement keeps the hair in its natural fall with zero manual tension, which minimizes pain and damage when it's done correctly. That's a big part of what the training covers.
Does it work on curly hair? Fine hair?
Yes to both. The method is customizable for all textures, including curly clients. For fine or thin hair, flat corners are your best friend. Sparse clients are the highest risk, and you'll learn exactly how to customize for them.
Do I have to be Luna Method certified to take your class?
No. My classes are the certification path. You show up, you train, and then you earn certification by proving your work.
Training with Kalea
Who teaches the classes?
I do. I'm Kalea Renee, an extension-only artist and educator in Austin, Texas. I've been in the hair industry since 2006, and I now see one to two extension clients a day in a schedule built around my life. I teach the method the way I practice it: slowly, intentionally, and with zero shortcuts.
What class formats do you offer?
Three: private 1:1 training in Austin, small group classes, and online training. Every format covers the same method. The difference is the setting, the pace, and the level of personal attention.
Where are in-person classes held?
Private 1:1 training is in South Austin. Small group classes are held in Austin and I travel through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, and beyond.
How long are the classes?
Small group trainings run two full days, hands-on from start to finish. Private 1:1 training is one full day, 9am to 5pm sometimes longer.
Is there anything I need to do before class?
Yes. New students complete up to 30 days of pre-training before the in-person class. It covers the foundations so you arrive with the basics mastered, and we can spend our in-person time on advanced questions and hands-on correction instead of starting from zero. Returning students are exempt.
What's included in my tuition?
Small group ($3,500): two full days of hands-on education, small-group instruction with real-time correction, dinner together on night one, 6 months of continued Luna education and video access, post-class support, and up to 30 days of pre-training for new students.
Private 1:1 ($5,500): one full day of private hands-on training, lunch, 6 months of post-class education, 12 months of video access, and up to 30 days of pre-training for new students.
Pay in full on either format and you'll also receive the Hair Workers Guild Tool Kit ($300 value). [CONFIRM: verify dinner, lunch, and kit details match your current class listings]
Do I need extension experience before I take the class?
No. You don't need prior extension experience, but you do need an active cosmetology license to perform extension services in Texas. If you're brand new to extensions, the 1:1 format gives you the most room to learn at your pace.
I'm a color specialist. Is this training for me?
If you want extensions to become part of your business, yes. Many of my students started as colorists. Fair warning: I went extension-only and never looked back. Niching down felt terrifying and paid off fast.
Will I work on a live model?
No. In class you'll work on a doll head, which is how you should learn: no pressure, full focus on technique, and the freedom to redo anything until it's right. Live humans come later, when you submit your certification installs on your own clients.
What should I bring to class?
Your tools, your wefts, your doll head, a tripod and phone for filming your work, note-taking supplies, and an open mind. You'll get links to the exact recommended tools before class so you only buy what you're missing. Dress how you feel best and wear comfortable shoes. We stand a lot, though you're welcome to sit anytime. Class is filmed, so you'll leave with content of your own work.
Cost and logistics
How much does training cost?
Small group training is $3,500. Private 1:1 training is $5,500. Online training is $250 every two weeks through the Luna Method Virtual Certification. Prices reflect hands-on education, pre-training, months of continued access, and lifetime entry into the Luna community.
Do you offer payment plans?
Yes. Reserve your spot with a deposit: $1,000 for small group, $2,750 for 1:1. [CONFIRM: when is the remaining balance due for your classes?] Note: the $300 tool kit bonus applies to pay-in-full enrollments only.
What is your cancellation and reschedule policy?
How do I sign up?
Choose your format on the Learn Luna Method page and check out through the class listing. Spots in small groups are limited on purpose, so they fill.
After training
Am I certified when I finish?
Not for showing up, and that's a good thing. Luna Method certification is earned, not handed out. After class, you'll submit real installs on human clients until you pass two installs and two corresponding grow-outs at 80% or higher. Every submission gets personalized grading with detailed feedback from an educator. When you pass, you're certified because you proved it.
What kind of support do I get after class?
Six months of continued education and feedback, personalized grading on your installs and grow-outs, and the Luna Method student community: ongoing access to artists learning the method alongside you. My students come for the education and stay for the connection.
How soon can I start taking extension clients?
That depends on you, but you'll leave class with everything you need to start. Most students begin taking models or clients within weeks. Speed comes later. Intention comes first.
Will this actually change my income?
I can't promise you numbers, but I can tell you what changed for me: I went from seeing twelve clients a day to one or two, doing only extensions, on a schedule I chose. Extensions were never meant to be a fast service. Done well, they're a premium one.
Online training and travel
Do you offer online training?
Yes. The Luna Method Virtual Certification is $250 every two weeks and includes the full certification curriculum across 100+ training videos, personalized install and grow-out grading with detailed feedback, and live coaching sessions where you bring your work and your questions. You progress from mannequin to human installs and earn certification the same way in-person students do: by proving it.
Can you come teach in my city or at my salon?
Possibly. Small group classes travel, and 1:1 training can come to your salon. Send me a message with your city and we'll talk about it.
I'm not in Texas. Can I still train with you?
Absolutely. Stylists travel to Austin for 1:1s and small groups all the time, and online training is available wherever you are. If you are intrested in having me host a class in your salon, send me a message and we can talk.
